- The Oscars Red Carpet: Best Dressed -

We all swooned over the gorgeous gowns on the red carpet at Hollywood’s biggest night - the Oscars! But, the dress that I couldn’t stop thinking about barely even made the red carpet coverage on either channel I watched it on. Kate Hudson looked stunning in a silvery white slinky Versace number with a back reminiscent of Old Hollywood Glamour. Soft, wavy hair and a plunging neckline and Kate Husdon topped the list of “Best Dressed” in a heartbeat! And, did you see her Vanity Fair afterparty dress? Kate killed it with both dresses.

Second on my list was my favorite until Kate Hudson appeared. Who doesn’t love a classic, beautiful Valentino dress? And, put a glowing pregnant Olivia Wilde in a chic straight Valentino gown with a pop of white in the back and you have styling perfection. Kudos to her stylist. Olivia’s earrings were amazing, too!

Of course, Lupita Nyong’o made the best dressed list again (the girl looks amazing every time she steps on the red carpet). Dubbed “Nairobi blue” by the actress, the Prada gown was designed for Lupita and inspired by champagne bubbles. (Notice the plunging neckline… a common theme at the Oscars this year). The red carpet was full of an array of colors, but the pastel blue really stood out and put us in the mood for spring. An unexpected Lady Gaga shocked everyone in a pretty pink pastel Versace number looking very elegant with a silk scarf around her neck and down the back. Art deco patterns were seen on a number of celebs and created a beautiful silhouette on the singer. Glamorous and classy looks wonderful on you, Lady Gaga!

Another color we kept seeing on the red carpet was nude hues. Both Cate Blanchett and Jenna Dewan-Tatum were eye-catching in their nude gowns. In lieu of the skin tone shade, both ladies wore modest gowns with short sleeves and special embellishments. Cate’s Armani Prive gown was adorned with gold sequins and swarovski crystals along with her Chopard jewels to finish the look. Jenna Dewan-Tatum sparkled in a beautiful Reem Acra gown escorted by her hottie hubby. Cate and Jenna looked ethereal and lovely with soft hair and minimal accessories.

Typically, you don’t see a lot of black gowns on the red carpet from A-listers… they just don’t typically get you “Best Dressed” but Charlize Theron shattered that rule in another plunging neckline, Dior Haute Couture fit and flare gown with a partially sheer skirt. Wow! The 31 carat Harry Winston jewels were all she needed with that jaw dropper of a dress.Sandra Bullock also stepped out in a darker hue (navy) Alexander McQueen gown. The draping was in just the right places with a sweetheart neckline that was so simple yet stunning. With a little Old Hollywood in her side-swept waves, Sandra Bullock had to be in the top 10 “Best Dressed.”

There were plenty of metallics like previous awards shows this season and Jennifer Garner tops the list of celebs in her fringy Oscar de la Renta silver metallic gown. She kept the accessories simple and in the same color family for a Gatsby feel.

Rounding out the red carpet top 10 is Jennifer Lawrence in a red peplum Dior Couture strapless gown. Sporting another back draped necklace, the funny girl looked sophisticated and elegant. The Neil Lane diamonds added just enough sparkle for the cut up to trip once again and not even have a hair out of place… or a misplaced diamond. Who knows if the trip was staged this year. Either way, the actress can definitely laugh it off.

The red carpet isn’t complete without acknowledging some of the gorgeous couples of the evening. Olivia Wilde smiled from ear to ear with husband Jason Sudeikis in Prada. Award winner (and Texas boy) Matthew McConaughey wore a white jacket as part of his Dolce & Gabbanna suit/tux. Camilla Alves was effortlessly beautiful in pale pink. Another dynamic duo that dressed to perfection were Dax Shepard in John Varvatos and wife Kristen Bell in Roberto Cavalli. And last but certainly not least - Brangelina. Brad Pitt in Tom Ford and Angelina Jolie in a metallic Ellie Saab Haute Couture gown kept their spot as a Hollywood power couple showing everyone how to make a red carpet impact. Major chic moment.

I can’t help but mention the beautiful Liza Minnelli and Bette Middler making everyone wish for their beauty secrets. Liza in cobalt blue and Bette in nude and red reminded Oscars viewers that you’re only as old as you feel (or look and both looked amazing!). And, award winner Jared Leto (also a Louisiana boy) must have gotten the white coat memo with his Saint Laurent look topped off with a red bowtie.

So, here they are again in photo order (top to bottom, left to right) Oscars Red Carpet Top 10:

  • Kate Hudson in Versace
  • Olivia Wilde in Valentino
  • Lady Gaga in Versace
  • Lupita Nyong’o in Prada
  • Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive
  • Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Reem Acra
  • Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen
  • Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture
  • Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta
  • Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture

Did you check out the afterparty looks for the Vanity Fair party? That’s a whole additional grouping of “Best Dressed”. It was an incredible night of fashion which did not dissapoint. All colors of the rainbow, soft pretty curls, and exciting dress details made the Oscars 2014 one to remember!

- Red Carpet Style: The Golden Globes -

Sunday’s Golden Globes were full of excitement from Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s entertaining hosting to intoxicated award recipients to the always anticipated red carpet.

This year red and metallics ruled the red carpet! Everyone gushed over Lupita Nyong’o’s Ralph Lauren cape dress while Amy Adams (top left) commanded attention in a plunging red Valentino gown and Julie Bowen and Taylor Swift wore two-toned red Carolina Herrera gowns with swept up hair.

My absolute favorite of the night was Kate Beckinsale in a gorgeous pewter Zuhair Murad curve-hugging sweetheart gown (center above). Michelle Dockery joined in the metallic fun in a sparkly Oscar de la Renta piece (bottom center) as well as Naomi Watts in a liquid gold Tom Ford dress.

Co-host Amy Poehler looked stunning in a simple black Stella McCartney gown showing just enough skin with a center cutout (top right). Also sticking to tried and true black, Lily Rabe (bottom left black gown) looked elegant in a George Hobeika piece, and Cate Blanchett made many best dressed lists in a beautiful Armani Prive open back lace gown.

Kate Beckinsale wore a face we can all replicate donning one of my favorite makeup lines - Jouer! Celebrity makeup artist Adam Breuchard explained the sexy, rock n’ roll look inspired by Kate’s silver and gunmetal gown:

”I started by smudging Jouer Creme Eyeshadow in Suede all over the eye. I blended Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Opal in the inner corner for a highlight, then layered Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Chocolat over her lid. Next, I applied Jouer Eye Definer in Noir along the top and bottom lash line. Over that I blended Jouer Powder Eyeshadow in Licorice to really smoke out the look.

After cleaning under her eye I applied the Jouer Age-Repairing Concealer in No.3 Cameo where needed. Then I applied the Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint in Bronzed as a foundation. It is sheer enough to let the skin show through where you want and build more coverage where you need.

On Kate’s cheeks, I applied Jouer’s cream Tint in Whisper and Mineral Powder Bronzer in Sunshine - my favorite go to duo. Together they define and brighten the cheek effortlessly.

To finish off the look I used Jouer Lip Gloss in Cherish.”

- Red Carpet Style: Golden Globe Standouts of 2013 -

This year’s Golden Globes Red Carpet had a few recurring themes:

1. Colors - red, blacks, whites/nudes (including ballet pink) were on 90% of those on the red carpet in satin, lace, and more

2. Necklines - plunging, strapless, covered & long sleeve, off the shoulder

3. Fit - mermaid gowns, princess, and high slits

4. Hair - Pretty & soft worn down, slightly messy updos, sleek & perfect updos, side-swept (low side bun, side braid, etc)

… just to name a few.

Colors outside of those were few and far between but were much appreciated when spotted. There were beautifully put together faces, outstanding updos, and jewels that were to-die-for. Among those on the red carpet, the ladies pictured above topped the Southern Chic Style list! Who were your favorites?

___________________________

My #1 & #2 (not sure who gets which) are:

Jessica Alba - wore Oscar de la Renta in a GORGEOUS sherbert hue with an amazing necklace & soft hair

Katherine McPhee - wore Theysken’s Theory in simple black with an eye-catching deep plunging neckline, dark nails, and a slightly messy chignon

___________________________

Next on the list:

Kerry Washington - wore Miu Miu & had everyone talking from the start. The plunging neckline was revealed behind a sheer overlay with a short skirt underneath as well. A style I forsee on many peoples’ lists come spring!

Naomi Watts - wore Zac Posen & was the first to wow everyone in a bold color! With a keyhole opening in front, open back and fish tail train, the ox blood long sleeve gown complemented the blonde classy updo

Rounding out the rest of the top 11 (couldn’t pick just 10):

Julianne Moore - wore Tom Ford in Fall’s black and white trend in a long sleeve gown. Her simple, sleek updo and red hair color added to the simple color combo beautifully

Lucy Liu - wore Carolina Herrera and surprised everyone with the ice blue and floral strapless princess piece - a lovely sight with Lucy’s fishtail braid

Kate Hudson - wore Alexander McQueen and could best be described as effortless. A plunging neckline on a long sleeve black gown with a few gold details, perfect makeup, and hair down looks effortlessly beautiful on Kate. But, I can’t think of a time she hasn’t looked effortlessly beautiful.

Lea Michele - wore Elie Saab in a lovely white halter dress with a high slit. Lea’s makeup and hair looked stunning, soft, and natural.

Nicole Kidman - wore Alexander McQueen. Nicole usually wears something beautiful, but this time she went a little more edgy & it worked! The sheer panels coupled with the hardware up top put her on the Southern Chic Style “Best Dressed” list

Miranda Kerr - everyone was too busy discussing her almost “Gone With the Wind” moment to reveal who she wore, but on Orlando Bloom’s arm, the “Angel” looked amazing in a red halter gown with a plunging neckline and high slit with beautiful earrings to complement

Hayden Panettiere - wore Roberto Cavalli strapless mermaid gown in pale pink with figure flattering detail. Another one who wore their hair down and soft with simple accessories and a natural makeup look.

Special mention to Julianne Hough’s hair! In a jeweled Monique Lhullier white princess gown, Julianne rocked an edgy updo that we couldn’t stop talking about!

- Kate Middleton stuns again in Jenny Packham -

I can’t help but love the blue Jenny Packham gown the Duchess wore for last Friday’s Olympic gala. The perfectly cinched waist, plunging neckline, and sheer lace back flatter from ever angle. With her hair elegantly pulled up, we can admire the fine details of the gown from a British designer we see on the Duchess fairly often.

I looked for ANY similar dresses out there now and only found one that came close. Going to look some more for anyone who’d buy a look-alike, and I’ll update later. In the mean time, let’s just ooo and ah at Kate!

- Falling for Fall 2012 -

And, I certainly am. The photos here are only a portion of the MANY looks I love so far from the Fall 2012 collections. The jewel tones are seen throughout with teal being dominate… more of the classic black and white, lots and lots of prints, sheer panels and cutouts, powder blue, and accessories galore.

Pictured first above is a look from 3.1 by Phillip Lim - maroon skinny pants with a front slit. A different look for the skinny pant, Phillip Lim wasn’t the only designer to incorporate this style.

In the second photo, this Alice + Olivia look is completed by the infinity scarf/shawl. It can be added to so many outfits for a new look. Scarves were also on display at Marc Jacobs this week. Photos of some of those looks to come in another post.

The third look (top right) is a beautiful blue Carlos Miele dress with boots that I absolutely adore! Almost all of the models rocked these boots in either this nude shade or black. LOVE them. And, notice the shredded detail on the front of the dress giving a simple frock some edge.

The next two gowns are Carlos Miele and Carolina Herrera. Gorgeous gowns in Fall prints.

The teal blazer is a look from the runway of Catherine Malandrino. The leather lapel dresses it up, and paired with the printed skirt provides the perfect fall look for work or dinner and drinks with the girls.

Diane von Furstenberg wowed me with look after look that I want for my own. The maroon off the shoulder long sleeved dress pictured above is just one of the classy, elegant pieces from this week’s showing in New York. I have plenty more to share with you from DVF’s collection.

The last two photos are both from backstage - eyes at Prabal Gurung and hair at Tracy Reese. The electric blue eyes are inspired by birds of paradise. A nest-like twist was a hairstyle of choice to incorporate a ”bird” theme at Tracy Reese.

Quite a collage of Fall 2012 fashions, but I couldn’t help myself. It’s only a portion of what’s already walked the runway and there’s still 3 more days of New York Fashion Week left! More of my favorites and standouts to come!

** Erin Fetherston, Jenny Packham, Skaist-Taylor, Thakoon, The Row, Victoria Beckham, Zac Posen, and more Fall 2012 runway looks in my arsenal.

Dress As The Royals Do

Most of us have seen the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) in the stunning Alexander McQueen dress she wore for The Sun’s Military Awards last night. It’s a beautiful velvet with a sweatheart neckline and frill to frame. The inset picture of Diana is there because Kate’s dress looks similar to one worn by Diana in 1981. Click here to read more about the dresses and see additional photos. America seems to look to Kate’s style just as we did Princess Diana’s.

I love that Kate’s dress is velvet. Black velvet is an amazing fabric for winter evening elegance, and the dress fits the Duchess like a glove! Kate’s favorite designer Sarah Burton made this dress for Alexander McQueen. I can’t help but love the fit of the dress with a fishtail-style skirt. Kate added a matching black velvet clutch, black pumps, and jewelry she received as a wedding present - a chunky diamond necklace with a bracelet and earrings to match.

I’m fully expecting this dress to be re-created by many designers very soon, but in the meantime, I found a few dresses with a similar elegant feel. The Phoebe Couture by Kay Unger gown has velvet embroidery and velvet panels mixed in with a black crepe-jersey sweatheart neckline. I found the gown at theoutnet.com for $161. The silk Nicole Miller gown also has the sweatheart neckline and pleating detail that flatters. This dress can be found at 6pm.com for $141.99. The third gown by Badgley Mischka Platinum Label is a black crinkled chiffon with (of course) a sweatheart neckline. It can also be bought in dark green and can be found at Bluefly.com in limited sizes for $277.19. Enter code “HOLIDAY40” and get $40 off since it’s over $200. Add a sparkly chunky necklace with earrings and a bracelet to one of these dresses with a beautiful black clutch and you’ll look as lovely as Kate, although a dress by Alexander McQueen would be lovely, too!

Speaking of Alexander McQueen, my book came in yesterday! LOVE it!
