- Austin Based Jewelry Designer Opens 1st Houston Stores -
Spotted recently on Kathy Lee and Hoda along with Natalie Morales on the TODAY Show and Lisa Vanderpump from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (of course hers were pink), Kendra Scott’s jewelry is seen gracing the wrists, ear, necks, etc. of everyone from celebrities to women at the office. The iconic Danielle earring has become the most recognizable and a signature of Kendra Scott’s collections, and Kendra’s Color Bar concept is a breakthrough in on the spot jewelry creating (read more about it below then shop pieces at the bottom).
Houstonians can now shop the jewelry designer’s beautiful hand-set pieces in Rice Village and City Centre! The jewelry company was started out of the 10 x 10 extra bedroom in Kendra’s home when she was put on bedrest while pregnant right after 9/11. She’d started a hat company before (The Hat Box - with two stores in Austin where she also made some jewelry) and knew she wanted to work in fashion and give back to the community. Growing up in Wisconsin then moving to Texas in her teens, Kendra considers herself a Texas girl. Little did I know before meeting her that she lived in The Woodlands when she first moved to Texas, so naturally, stores in Houston were a no-brainer! The mom of two boys, she still finds a way to balance opening new retail stores throughout the country and creating new pieces. Kendra explained to me that anyone who works with her knows that family comes first.
The Balinese inspired Spring collection was on display as a sneak peek at the Rice Village store for the interviews with the designer. And, Kendra (in her chic Victoria Beckham dress) took some time to show me how the amazing Color Bar works! You all HAVE to check this out! You can see the jewelry you create set by hand in the store after you create it, then you can take your custom piece home or even wear it out of the store!
Here’s how The Color Bar, who’s background colors change througout the day on the Danielle stones, works (third photo above shows Kendra at part of the Color Bar): on the bottom of the screen, anyone can scroll through the wide range of jewelry options from earrings, to rings, to bracelets and necklaces and choose which one you want to create. The price is even displayed at the top right so you know what you’re working with. Next, you can choose from a rainbow of stone color options on both sides of the screen. Pick one color and touch your finger to the spots on your piece you want to be that stone color. You can make every stone a different color, create a single color design, or any combination of the colors you want! The girls in the store are trained to then create that piece on the spot for you to take home. Shoppers can watch this take place while they wait. Such an innovative concept. Brides have reserved the Color Bar and taken their bridesmaids to the store and let each one pick a design they can create in the colors of the wedding (even on the Friday before the wedding as it’s made on the spot)! Girls can reserve it and get together and each create a piece of their own for a friend’s birthday celebration - don’t worry about the cake as the store provides cupcakes and champagne for parties planned at the store! What a great way to get together with your friends and have a fun afternoon of girl time! The cupcakes above were displayed on the “bar” area of the Color Bar used for parties. The Color Bar allows you to create jewelry for your favorite college team game day or even allows you to give personalized hostess gifts, birthday presents, even Christmas gifts.
When I asked Kendra about her favorite stone to work with, turqoise was the first mentioned which fits in with her Texas inspiration, but also the new grey cats eye stone she’s been working with! The cuff Kendra is wearing includes the gorgeous stone that can be worn as a neutral with just about everything.
Everyone who works for Kendra was so helpful and a visit to the store was a calm, easy shopping experience. I’m a big fan of the Skylar earring (looks like an arrow head) that I purchased in the white stone for myself which I wore in the game day post not too long ago and was gifted a beautiful green pair that I wore to an event last night! The timeless pieces can be worn season after season while Kendra continues to find new ways to keep our attention with her new creations. I want to plan a get-together with friends at the Color Bar just to use it! The jewelry possibilities are endless!
