- Bringing Handmade to You -

Most people these days are familiar with the flash sale websites offering a designer’s label or jewelry or home goods for only a few days that comes to your inbox daily. Well, think of this concept but with independent designers who make their pieces by hand. Clay and Elly Bethune made that concept a reality in 2013 with 9thelm.com.

9th & Elm is a website that brings independent designers to one website for you to shop. The most exciting part (for me) is you discover talented individuals you may never have come across creating items from handmade jewelry to clothing and swim suits to home decor pieces.

The casual boho chic look you see above is created from a lace headband, arrow tank, and silver arrow bracelet (similar one here) all from 9thelm.com. Each piece I ordered was from a different designer and all 3 are high quality items I will definitely utilize over and over again. I truly saw how 9th & Elm works with the designers when only the gold arrow bracelet was available, but the designer located one last silver one that I was able to have sent to me. And, everything arrived promptly in great condition. Now I find myself checking the website weekly, if not daily, for more exciting wares. Before writing this, I found the coolest monogrammed Chuck Taylors. So many independent creatives now available at your fingertips!

Because cutoffs have made a major comeback this summer (you’ll see them everywhere!) the light denim perfectly paired with the arrow tank which HAD to go with the headband for a chic boho summer look. What I loved so much about the tank (only $29 on 9thelm.com) is that it can be worn for a laid back look, thrown over your swim suit, and is perfect to travel in your bag for a weekend getaway. The silver arrow bracelet coordinates with the tank standing alone on your wrist or as an exciting addition to your arm party. And, lace headbands ($21) are available in multiple colors so you can choose the best hue for your hair color and skin tone. A slide on sneaker completes the look with style mixed with comfort for summer.

9th & Elm is a wonderful way to support small businesses without having to seek out unique items website after website. Just take a few minutes to peruse the “handmade, independent, or otherwise cool” pieces from 9th & Elm… that few minutes will quickly turn into more!

- Black & White & Grey All Over -

One of my favorite neutrals for summer is grey. All shades and variations of grey find their way into my outfits throughout the warm months. The grey Miu Miu bag that was a gift from my hubby at Christmas (and was on sale!) combined with the Saint Laurent silver pumps that were on sale at Neimans have become a power combo for me. That’s one of the great aspects of grey accessories that I love… the hues don’t have to be exactly the same to work together.

A white blazer, black SIXTWENTY tank, and sheer Enza Costa pants from TOOTSIES create a warm weather ensemble that calls for the bag/shoe combo. The textured look of the pants coordinate with the silver pump and grey bag since they don’t “match”. Too much of the same shade of grey (and I don’t mean “50 Shades”) creates a bland palette, so add some texture, print, or metallic when your accessories and wardrobe are similar hues.

When you break down this simple look, each piece can go on to inspire so many of your summer outfits simply paired with colorful or printed pieces. A white blazer goes with just about anything. And, who can live without a black tank? Mixed with a printed short or skirt and colorful bag, a black tank is a staple. You’ll be amazed how often a silver metallic pump will work with your outfits, and when black or brown don’t seem to do the trick, a grey bag saves the day!

So, if you’re tired of tan and want to add new life to even the most basic look, try a little grey with bright colors (like summer’s pink trend), other neutrals, or even to compliment a floral.

Blazer: White Blazer from my closet (similar here)

Pant: Enza Costa from TOOTSIES (similar here)

Necklace: Kenneth Jay Lane Branch Necklace (here in red)

Hat: Asos Floppy Hat (similar here)

- Spring Trends: Floral and Orange -
While both orange and florals were trends last spring, too, I can’t get enough of the floral and orange pieces available this season! And, the two look amazing when put together like the model from the runway above.

Use the trends to create an outfit or accessorize a basic look. Add an orange bag and floral blazer to a little black dress or with a white skirt with a coordinating tank in a hue from the blazer. If you bought a great orange or floral piece last spring, you’ll be excited to get to incorporate the trend for another season.

Floral is such a versatile print giving you the ability to pair it with every color present in the print you purchase. Everyone needs a floral blazer, bag, dress, or top to really make the spring shades pop. And, of course orange creates a bold statement when added to a print or with a neutral palette. Using garments you already own to create an outfit and adding a new orange and/or floral piece steps up your look from office attire to grabbing dinner with friends. Check out the orange and floral pieces below to find what will make your Spring & Summer wardrobe sing!

- A Closer Look -

It’s Thursday and who doesn’t love a good “Throwback Thursday” instagram, facebook, or twitter post? In the spirit of #tbt, here’s a closer look at the SCS partnership with Sam & Lilli from December. If you missed the post or their email, you can check it out here: http://southernchicstyle.tumblr.com/post/69814869366/if-youre-looking-for-what-to-wear-this-holiday

While I chose the looks based on holiday happenings, the outfits still work for events on your calendar this month and the next. Necklaces, bracelets, belt, and bags in the photos are also from Sam & Lilli and are great accessories throughout the year.

Try the plaid look for a casual date night, the skirt and silk button down for work then happy hour, the silk pant and sweater for running errands or a laid back lunch with your girlfriends, and dress up in the dress and clutch for Valentine’s Day dinner, a work dinner, or even a sophisticated night out on the town.

Find styles like these at Sam & Lilli2800 Kirby Dr., Ste a-133, Houston, TX

- Holiday Hostess Gifting -
Holiday hustle and bustle is right! We’re already scrambling to finish Christmas shopping with fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, so hostess gifts may be an after thought for all of the holiday parties in your life!
Wine is an easy go-to gift, but what do you do for the hostess who doesn’t drink wine? A friend brought my husband and I one of the best hostess gifts ever when we had our Olympics party - a really good Balsamic vinegar! Don’t get me wrong - we do love wine, but it was great getting the kitchen staple. Pictured here you may have assumed those were wine bottles, but I loved the gift so much (my husband LOVES balsamic vinegar) that this year we decided to bring a good Italian balsamic to the parties we had on our calendar this past weekend. They look like wine but among the bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinots, this gift added some diversity.
Etiquette suggests bringing something to your hosts when invited to the holiday parties (elaborate and expensive not necessary) and easy is better when crunched for time. These two bottles of Italian balsamic that I found at Home Goods were a great find. I added the bows, but for those who don’t enjoy bow making, the accessories you can buy for wine bottles work great on the wine bottle sized vinegar.
Other great gift ideas outside of the wine world include candles, a decorative holiday plate, and even a kitchen accessory you know the hostess would enjoy - cheese plate, monogrammed mug, hot chocolate gift set, specialty food items, and even a scented soap or lotion. Be sure to stick with a price range you’re comfortable with. No need to break the bank. It’s the gesture that counts! Add a personalized touch with with a simple bow, cute holiday tag, candy cane tied to the gift, or accessory.

- Seeing (and wearing) Stingray -

We’ve incorporated python, croc, and other reptiles into the prints in our life, and just when you thought you’d accumulated them all…. enter Stingray! I started noticing this print ALL OVER this season. At the Miu Miu Opening Party, I saw the above pictured wedge in many colors along with handbags and clutches, then at Elaine Turner (local Houston designer) I saw the above wrap bracelet in the print as well as shoes and handbags, then Tory Burch, then I noticed the print from Alexander McQueen, and on and on….

Pictured here are just a few of the items you can find utilizing the stingray print - from pumps, to watches, to bangles and flats… Take a look and you’ll see this print in more pieces than you may have noticed. I find stingray a tad more subtle than python or croc, and therefore stingray seems to be finding its way onto the fashion scene in so many forms. Most are a stingray pattern (like the YSL ring pictured) or stamped leather with the print (animal lovers should be happy to know that). Your higher end items may be the real thing, but you’ll be on trend even with the stamped versions. Add a pop here or there in a great handbag, sassy stiletto, or unique statement jewelry and take on the day!

Jewelry that’s Uniquely Yours
Last fall during Fashion Houston, I spotted a table covered in beautiful stone jewelry. As I went through the gorgeous pieces, I visited with the very talented Wayne Anderson - owner/creator/designer of the stunning jewelry line I was viewing: VITA New York. Turns out, Wayne didn’t always design jewelry.
'Wayne remembers, “I actually went to a trade show once, and I was selling and making handbags at the time and nobody was at my booth, they were all at the jewelry line!” '
And from there, enter VITA New York. Wayne works with semi-precious stones and never shapes them to keep the stones organic and natural. No one piece will be the same. Pictured above are pieces currently on the VITA New York website. You’ll find single, double, and triple stone earrings, rings, and necklaces along with what Wayne named the “wrist belt”. Only 4 weeks after creating the “wrist belt”, Harper’s Bazaar was calling to include it in their October 2010 issue. Click here to view a segment that aired on ABC Saturday about Wayne and VITA New York. Wayne demonstrates how to wear the “wrist belt” and discusses the inspiration behind his line.
I walked away from VITA New York’s table with my own unique single stone ring which I find myself wearing often. I definitely plan on adding more to my collection very soon. To get your own one-of-a-kind piece, go to www.vitanewyorkstore.com. Wayne also travels for home shows if you have a group of friends who love jewelry as well. No two are ever the same, and every single one is beautiful. And, the prices make it really hard to pass up. Take a look!
