- Fashion Houston: Nicole Miller ‘Just Wants to Have Fun’ -

Designer Nicole Miller closed out Night 2 of Fashion Houston with an energetic finale. As a Fashion Houston contributor, here’s my recap of her runway show from Fashion Houston’s blog.

Stripes, florals, lace details, and a print inspired by Versailles comprised designer Nicole Miller’s collection seen Night 2 of Fashion Houston. Models walked the runway with messy braids as headbands and shoes that complemented the collection.

The New York based, Texas born designer created pieces that are beautifully feminine while unique and edgy – sure to set any fashionista apart in a crowd. Black and white stripes were mixed with colorful florals, crop tops with high waisted skirts, and lace details adorning jackets, dresses, and frilly tops. Each garment contained design elements that flatter the female shape in modern silhouettes. Black and white stripes were even spotted on the back of the beautiful heels on the catwalk designed by Nicole Miller herself.

Miller’s backdrop for the lively show was a beautiful muted floral with columns and windows. Further emphasizing the feminine theme of the collection, the energetic finale had the crowd cheering as models danced down the runway in a group to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” – such an exciting way to close out night 2! Dressing the country’s most fashionable since the 80’s, Nicole Miller continues to solidify with the style obsessed that her collection is still relevant, necessary in your closet, and on the top of shopping “must-have” lists season after season… especially with Spring 2014 seen at Fashion Houston!

- Fashion Houston’s Night 2 Brings the Chic -

Houston’s Wortham Center was abuzz with the city’s most fashionable for the second night of Fashion Houston! With collections walking the runway from Bibhu Mohapatra, Peter Millar, Rebecca Taylor, Cut 25 by Yigal Azrouel, and Nicole Miller, raving reviews were heard from all.

New to the Fashion Houston lineup was Peter Millar and his menswear collection. The women didn’t seem to mind the change in pace with male models and the collection that featured pieces from swim trunks to Fall sweaters.

Yigal Azrouel showed his contemporary collection Cut 25 and will show his namesake designer collection tonight at Fashion Houston. Those not familiar with Cut 25 kept saying how they needed to have some Cut 25 in their lives after Yigal’s edgy and fun contemporary line hit the runway.

Even though Nicole Miller was recently in Houston at TOOTSIES showing off her collection, her spring pieces caught everyone’s attention in beautiful prints on styles that flatter the body. The models each walked with a messy braid around their head that complemented each look perfectly!

I’ll have more for you from Bibhu Mohapatra, Rebecca Taylor, and Yigal Azrouel coming soon complete with interviews with the amazing designers during their time in Houston.

For the chilly night, leather Escada pants were ideal with my newest black peplum Miu Miu top, Kendra Scott necklace and earrings in red hues, mini Balenciaga bag, and Chanel booties. Jenny from Tidbits looked great on the red carpet in her chic black romper!

Tonight’s another packed night with Yigal Azrouel, David Peck, Chloe Dao, and Rolando Santana taking the runway!

- Nicole Miller: Gorgeously Dressing Women Since the 80s -

Designer Nicole Miller is a staple in American fashion cranking out garments women love year after year. TOOTSIES Houston brought the Texas born designer in for a trunk show of her Fall 2013 collection and to be a part of the Women of Wardrobe Soiree this year! Miller hadn’t been to Houston in over 10 years, so it was quite a treat :) With her Fall Collection in tow at TOOTSIES, Nicole Miller spent some Q&A time with me & I was able to play dress up in a few of my Nicole Miller favorites (in the photos above) with beautiful cutouts and sheers, leather, and feminine details.

Sitting down with Nicole Miller (pictured with me in her Fall ‘rocker chic’ and I in one of her peplum dresses) who was born in Fort Worth, Texas but raised in Massachusetts, the designer credits much of her success to her perseverance and truly being a “hands on” designer. Born to a Parisienne mother and an American father with an “engineer-like mind,” Miller explained that as a child her father taught her Morse code. Her technical abilities, which have benefited the designer in garment making and construction, stem from her father’s influence.

The self-proclaimed “fabric junkie” (believe it or not) never owned a Barbie! She always played with French dolls and was dressed by her mother in French influenced styles. Since becoming a designer, Nicole Miller has now partnered with Barbie for 2 different Nicole Miller designed Barbies - a fun opportunity to channel your inner child with the iconic doll as an adult!

When I asked who the woman is that she designs for, Nicole Miller quickly responded “all women!” This is evident to us all by the draping Miller has become known for - a product of her Parisienne training in draping fabric and classical couture. We’ve come to know the designer for her signature fabric manipulation. The curve hugging ruching happened by accident, according to Miller. She was working on a dress and had an idea to do an asymmetrical pleat… figured out the style was so flattering, like her dress here

With a design philosophy of “Break every rule,” Miller shared that she designed her own wedding dress in the 90s using black and white checkered dresses from the ‘91 collection for bridesmaids. Nicole Miller went on to say, “I always say ‘I’ll never do that,’ then I do!” - proving we’ll continue to see Nicole Miller designs that push the envelope from ordinary including the good girl/bad girl influences seen in her collections.

An American designer collection withstanding decades of changing fashion, Nicole Miller has expanded to bridal, shoes, sunglasses… even headphones. Shop all of the looks seen above at TOOTSIES as well as the rest of Nicole Miller’s Fall Collection - I could see each and every piece in my closet and am getting the leggings ASAP!

Thanks to TOOTSIES for the opportunity to spend time with Nicole Miller and to Nicole Miller and her fab team who were incredible between interviews, the trunk show, and a packed WOW Soiree!

Dress As The Royals Do

Most of us have seen the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) in the stunning Alexander McQueen dress she wore for The Sun’s Military Awards last night. It’s a beautiful velvet with a sweatheart neckline and frill to frame. The inset picture of Diana is there because Kate’s dress looks similar to one worn by Diana in 1981. Click here to read more about the dresses and see additional photos. America seems to look to Kate’s style just as we did Princess Diana’s.

I love that Kate’s dress is velvet. Black velvet is an amazing fabric for winter evening elegance, and the dress fits the Duchess like a glove! Kate’s favorite designer Sarah Burton made this dress for Alexander McQueen. I can’t help but love the fit of the dress with a fishtail-style skirt. Kate added a matching black velvet clutch, black pumps, and jewelry she received as a wedding present - a chunky diamond necklace with a bracelet and earrings to match.

I’m fully expecting this dress to be re-created by many designers very soon, but in the meantime, I found a few dresses with a similar elegant feel. The Phoebe Couture by Kay Unger gown has velvet embroidery and velvet panels mixed in with a black crepe-jersey sweatheart neckline. I found the gown at theoutnet.com for $161. The silk Nicole Miller gown also has the sweatheart neckline and pleating detail that flatters. This dress can be found at 6pm.com for $141.99. The third gown by Badgley Mischka Platinum Label is a black crinkled chiffon with (of course) a sweatheart neckline. It can also be bought in dark green and can be found at Bluefly.com in limited sizes for $277.19. Enter code “HOLIDAY40” and get $40 off since it’s over $200. Add a sparkly chunky necklace with earrings and a bracelet to one of these dresses with a beautiful black clutch and you’ll look as lovely as Kate, although a dress by Alexander McQueen would be lovely, too!

Speaking of Alexander McQueen, my book came in yesterday! LOVE it!
